Course Syllabus – Spring 2011

EDUL 6369 – Administration Technology in Schools

Course Description: This course examines the different areas of involvement and issues encountered when working with technology as a public school administrator. This course will help prepare the student for active participation in the planning and implementation of technology in schools both in the administrative and/or instructional areas.

Required Text: Picciano, Anthony G. (2006). Educational Leadership and Planning for Technology (5th Edition). Upper Saddle River, NJ: Pearson Education, Inc.

Additional readings and presentations intended to enhance the text material, may be provided by the instructor.

Instructional Format/Expectations:

Course Format: This course will be taught using an asynchronous online format. Students will log in on-line as needed to complete assignments by the assignment due dates (see schedule below). Students will submit assignments via the Blackboard learning environment.

Blackboard Account: Each student will need to obtain a Blackboard account and password in order to be able to submit assignments electronically. Please contact the Center for Online Learning Teaching and Technology (COLT2) IT Support at 318-5346 in order to obtain an account and password. You can also access the COLT2 website at http://cdl.utpa.edu/helpdesk/index.cfm?event=home.

Participation is mandatory: Every student is expected to participate in on-line discussions. Participation alone is not sufficient. Meaningful participation is expected. Meaningful participation by all will allow for a greater exchange of knowledge and experiences to the benefit of all. Lack of meaningful participation will be noted and will affect the student’s grade.

Reflections/Journal Article Critique: Reflection/critique must be a typed single page narrative expressing your internalization of either the chapter(s) assigned for the week or 2 of an article from a peer-reviewed journal. The article must relate to the chapter topics for the week. I must receive your reflection/critique on the day we meet for class (see schedule below).

Refrain from using the articles/books referenced by the author. Use APA Style (6th Ed) in your reflections/critiques.

On-line Topic Discussion: Topics will be provided to which each student must respond. The response for each topic must be comprehensive. A one or two sentence response will not suffice. Simply agreeing with someone else will not suffice. The last two discussions will be student responses to each of the presentations.  For each chapter, each student must respond to one discussion item and must provide feedback to one other student’s discussion.

Technology Presentation: Students will be grouped to present on a technology related topic. The presentation will be uploaded via Blackboard so that other students can view the presentation. Each group can supplement their presentation with articles, reports, and other documents as deemed appropriate. Additional reading materials should be provided to the entire class with enough time to read prior to the presentation.  The key to this project is details, details, details. . . provide enough material so that your audience can appreciate not only the issue at hand but completely understand the logic or reasoning behind any solution. This is intended to be a learning exercise.  The presentation should be uploaded so that other students can view the presentation independently. The presentation can include images, video, text, etc.

The Challenge: This is a technology course, try to complete the presentation without having to meet physically. Those groups meeting the challenge will receive 10 extra points to their grade.

Post Presentation: Each group member must send me an e-mail detailing what each group member contributed and whether or not the group met physically to complete the project.

Group 1: Discuss 5 educator friendly wikis. Define what a wiki is, the benefits of each wiki you present and the limitations. Provide a demonstration of each.

Group 2: Discuss the use of social networking (Twitter, Facebook, etc.) sites for instructional purposes and where your group stands on this issue.

Group 3: Discuss your group position on Electronic Textbooks vs. Traditional Textbooks for educational purposes. Provide a comparison of benefits and limitations.

Provide actual products for the class to “play with.”

Group 4: Develop a plan for keeping track of technology equipment across your district and preventing theft or inappropriate use. Identify and provide demos of the technology utilized for the tracking and prevention of theft/inappropriate use.

Group 5: Discuss at least 3 different web conferencing software solutions that can be used by school districts. Discuss their features and limitations. Identify which one your group selects as the best solution and give reasons why.

Electronic Portfolio: Students will be required to create an electronic portfolio. The intent of the electronic portfolio is to enhance the student’s professional repertoire. Student’s that already have an electronic portfolio established will be required to update their existing portfolio.

Each student will need to contact the Educational Technology Resource Center (ETRC) at 381-3449 in order to obtain a password and account. Students can access the ETRC website at http://etrc.panam.edu/.
